Swedish Massage Course

Swedish Massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage developed in the 18th century in Sweden. A Swedish man, Per Henrik Ling, developed Swedish massage and introduced it into the U.S. in 1858 as “The Swedish Movement Cure”.  He created his system by combining his knowledge of gymnastics, and physiology and from Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman techniques. It is a full body massage that uses a combination of long strokes, kneading motions, friction, stretching, and sometimes tapping on the layers of tissue against one another. It is used to increase blood flow to the area.

Swedish massage is used to improve circulation, ease muscle tension, promote relaxation, improve flexibility, and rids the body of waste products. It can be slow and gentle or more vigorous depending on what the therapist is trying to be accomplished. Lotion is often used to reduce friction and stimulate skin health.

Learn the western standard massage therapy developed by Pehr Henrik Link. They include effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration and tapotement techniques, which represent a general massage system that focuses on increasing circulation and promoting relaxation.
